Wonderful moment of Artists-in-Residence 2011

Artists-in-Residence 2011-2013 is a multi-disciplinary arts education programme which aims at enhancing the appreciation of performing arts among secondary school students in Hong Kong. Supported by BNP Paribas and the BNP Paribas Foundation, and organised by HK Arts Festival, the Project brings top professional artists into secondary schools to develop the creativity of students through interactive arts training.

Birmingham Royal Ballet from UK and Cie 111 from France are the residence artists for the programmes in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Participating schools include: Elegantia College, Fung Kai Liu Man Shek Tong Secondary School and TWGHs Li Ka Shing College.

For the 2011 Project, more than 60 students joined a fun-filled casting and 38 of them participated in workshops hosted by Birmingham Royal Ballet as well as two local artists. Beside the school showcase in Dec 2010, they also presented their public show in Feb 2011 at the foyer of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

The short piece they performed was based on Birmingham Royal Ballet’s signature piece, “Hobson’s Choice”. It is an uplifting ballet which tells a love story between a humble shoe maker and his boss’ daughter. The show was well-received by a large enthusiastic audience.

The “Aux captifs, la liberation” association, founded in 1980, works to get to know and orient people who live or who come from the streets.
With the aim of responding to the needs of these people, specific structures have been developed:

•   A reception centre
•   The Dauphine Lazare housing facility for young people
•   The Health on the Streets centre
•   A housing and stabilization centre

How does the Valgiros centre work? Who is it there for? Who is behind this initiative?

Its goal: to give people living on the streets the time and space they need to gain strength and rebuild themselves, and to develop a new sense of autonomy, all by living together with other socially-reintegrated people or volunteers.

The “Aux captifs, la liberation” association has been supported by the Coup de pouce programme of the BNP Paribas Foundation.

The Semailles association is part of the Réseau Cocagne, a network comprising more than 100 gardens throughout France.

Semailles works around 3 areas:

•   Integration through horticulture
•   Integration through floriculture
•   Environmental and Sustainable Development Education

The association, based on the same principles used for market gardening, created in 2008 “Fleurs de Cocagne”, an innovative project whose purpose is : to produce flowers that are “natural, local and cooperative”, to prepare flower bouquets and to distribute them to a network of members.

In this way, Fleurs de Cocagne supports the social and professional integration of women, who, during the length of their contract with the association, get to build a new professional future.

The Semailles association has benefited from Projet Banlieues, a program of the BNP Paribas Foundation.

The Montjoye association, based in Nice (South of France), works on social inclusion of young people as well as adults.

It has three main objectives:
• Child protection
• Inclusion through training and housing
• Education on citizenship

Montjoye has recently launched a new initiative for young people, aged between 16 and 25, called “PASSAJ service”. Its goal is to allow these young adults to find a stable job and to become responsible and autonomous citizens. As of today, more than 70 young people benefited from this service.

The Montjoye association has been supported by the Projet Banlieues, a programme sponsored by BNP Paribas.

After a serious motorcycle accident, Claude Abejan decided to create an association called « Les Harley du cœur » (Bigheartedly Bikers)… All of the sudden it became indispensable for him to help people with a handicap or disability to offer them a little bit of happiness and….excitement!
To do so, a group of biker friends meet with children who have a handicap and take them on a bike ride on their Harleys.

Today, this association contributes to all sorts of good causes like the Téléthon, the Solidarity Days (les journées solidarité), the Shoe Pyramid (la Pyramide des chaussures), different local events, and so on…

The Bikers du coeur share, with generosity and humbleness, a bit of their time, a big smile and overall, a strong passion for biking.

The “Harley du coeur” association has benefited from the BNP Paribas Foundation’s Coup de pouce programme.

BlogTV: Raising Awareness to Prevent Violence against Women

Created in 1985, the association “Centre d’Information sur les Droits des Femmes et de la Famille (CIDFF)” informs, orients, and supports all women affected by domestic violence.

Its various objectives:

•   To inform and reflect upon the theme of violence against women
•   To promote equality in all of its forms among women and men
•   To raise awareness among young generations

During their participative workshops, a group of social workers lead the discussion, listen to young adults, and stir their reactions with statistics that reflect the tough reality of today: in France, a woman is raped every two hours; a woman dies at the hands of a man every two days and a half….numbers that can’t leave anyone indifferent!

CIDFF has been supported by the Projet Banlieues, a programme sponsored by BNP Paribas.

BlogTV: Bringing the Child out of the Bubble

The association, “Autisme Espoir Vers l’Ecole (AEVE)” an entirely volunteer-run project, helps autistic children reach a social and educational life that is as normal as possible.

How? AEVE relies on an intensive pedagogical method that lasts between two to three years called the “3i Method”.

How does it work?
The “3i Method” is a developmental method based on Intensive, Individual, and Interactive play, which takes place between the child and a member of his family or a voluntary worker within the association.

This play method is adapted for all children, as it responds to each child’s developmental problem and personal rhythm.

As of today, 6 000 volunteers and 35 psychologists work with nearly 200 children, but this number keeps increasing, given the positive results obtained.

AEVE is supported by BNP Paribas Foundation’s Coup de pouce programme.

1 000 visages is an association created by Eiji Leno and Uda Benyamina in 2006. It gives young people coming from unprivileged neighbourhoods the opportunity to step into the world of cinema and multimedia.

The association uses the short films they produce for educational purposes. That is, to reach different audiences (associations, schools) with the aim of promoting social values.

For example, young people and recognized French cinema actors participated in their video clip “Voting is Power” in order to attract young people to register and vote.

1 000 visages, 1 000 skills and 1 000 goals: to step into the world of cinema, to support projects, to fight against discrimination, debates, social commitment…

The 1 000 visages association is supported by the program Projets Banlieues of the BNP Paribas Foundation.

Rediscovery of a Venetian masterpiece

It took five months to restore Veronese’s masterpiece at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, thanks to the support of the BNP Paribas Foundation, Switzerland.

The “Entombment of Christ”, hung above a door, used to grace the great drawing room in the Louis XIV’s apartments at Versailles. This work by Paolo Caliari (1528-1588), known as Veronese, was probably painted in Venice in about 1575 and depicts the body of Christ being placed in the tomb with a delicately sketched landscape in the background. After being sent to Paris in 1802, the picture was passed to the city of Geneva in 1805. It was exhibited first at the City Hall before being transferred to the Museée Rath as soon as it opened in 1826.

The picture, whose poor condition was causing concern, needed restoration work which was undertaken this year with the support of the BNP Paribas Foundation, Switzerland.
The work was included in a much broader study of the collections of Italian paintings at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in collaboration with Professors Mauro Natale and Frédéric Elsig of the University of Geneva.
The “Entombment of Christ” needed five months of restoration work and has been on public display since the end of September.
The results of the research will be announced on 25th November during a study day dedicated to this masterpiece. As well as a scrupulous analysis of the painting itself, the study day will also offer an opportunity to discover the rich and varied range of crafts and skills involved in caring for the collections.
