On 6 April 2009 an earthquake of a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale occurred in the central italian region of Abruzzo. The majority of the damage occurred in the medieval city of L’Aquila (capital city of the Abruzzo region) and the surrounding villages.

The earthquake caused damage to many buildings and several of them collapsed. Onna, a town near L’Aquila, was reported to be mostly severly damaged with 38 deaths among the 350 residents.

The earthquake killed at least 294 people, more than 1,500 are injured and around 28,000 have been made homeless. The earthquake was felt as far away as Rome and in other parts of Central Italian regions. People involved in this tragic event have found accommodation in tented camps and another 10,000 are housed in hotels on the East coast with the help of the Italian Red Cross and Italian Civil Protection.
