On Sunday April 5th, 2009, BNP Paribas Greece organised a tree planting event at Marathon. Situated around 45 km from Athens, this place of historical significance gave the name of the long distance run that is today known as “marathon”.

The employees gathered with their families, and planted more than 300 trees, in an area, which will soon become a green recreation square for local residents. Although most of the staff had no experience with planting trees, there was a strong will and devotion to help the environment and commit a good deed. Employees were motiveted by the rewarding pleasure of doing something useful.

This event was organised with the support of the Marathon Municipality representatives, among  whom the mayor of Marhathon, Spýros Zágaris, and the Deputy Mayor Iannis Boussalas.

” We appreciate the fact that people dedicate their Sunday to come here and do some collective work for our Municipality” declared the Mayor.

This initiative combined environmental action and friendly team-building, as well as the promotion of volunteer work among staff and their children. It was organized in the framework of the branch Corporate Social Responsibility program (CSR) which puts an emphasis on ecology and thus, organises a green event every year, the last one being a beach cleaning nearby Athens.

“I got the opportunity to spend a good moment with my children who appreciated to see their mum busy with a “green” action, ” commented a staff member.

As a result of a contest organized among the staff a few days earlier, the place will be named “Revival Square” .

“We feel this place is a little bit ours and we will come back regularly to see how the trees grow,” commented another employee.
